WAILUA — Should the world as we know it still exist, Saturday will be a historic day of global unity, with 100 million people at more than 300 sites worldwide honoring the birth of a new humanity as part of Birth 2012.
On Kaua‘i, residents will convene at Lydgate Park in Wailua for a global birthday celebration dubbed “Birth 2012 Kaua‘i — It’s Just the Beginning.”
The event is from 1 to 9 p.m. and will include a Hawaiian blessing, children’s activities, a poetry reading, music and dance, taiko drumming, a performance by the Goddess Chant choir and a special closing ceremony synchronized with the closing ceremony in Los Angeles.
Organizer Dennis Mendonça said the event will focus on unity consciousness and bringing together the people who are working to make Kaua‘i a better place.
It’s very much about linking the consciousness movement with the social justice movement and creating Kaua‘i as an island of coherence, he said.
The end of the long-count Mayan calendar today has provoked apocalyptic fears, doomsday books and films, parodies and is even triggering outbreaks of panic, states a Birth 2012 news release. By contrast, the far more positive and forward-looking Birth 2012 movement organized by The Shift Network offers a creative and hopeful alternative.
“In the midst of this chaos there has been one woman who has been telling a different story,” the release states. “Over the last two years, Barbara Marx Hubbard has been giving classes, and taught over 4,000 people to think differently about these times. She offers a healthy alternative to the chaos of the times and aims to turn this exciting moment in time towards an experience of coherence.”
Hubbard is calling for a collective shift to a new way of living: a turning point to unify people all over the globe around a commitment to create a world that works for all, the release states.
On Saturday, more than 100 million people will gather to celebrate the birth of this new era. The Shift Network will have a 33-hour live broadcast from places around the globe, including Mexico, Egypt, India, Japan, Australia, Israel, Ghana Scotland, Guatemala, Brazil and numerous locations in the United States.
The event on Kaua‘i begins at 1 p.m. with a brief introduction and Hawaiian blessing. An Evolutionary Town Meeting from 2 to 4 p.m. will begin with participants gathering in small groups to answer the question, “What do you want to give birth to?”
A potluck will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 and participants are asked to bring their own plate and utensils, as well as a dish to share.
A performance by the Goddess Choir begins at 6:30, followed by the closing celebration, which will be synchronized with others around the planet.
Other musicians for the day include Candace Freeland, Kam Goodman, Emma Hagan, Johanna Hosea and Korie Goodman. Phil Villatora will share his Tahitian drummers and fire dancers before the evening closes with birthday cake and a lullaby.
