WAILUA — Kapa‘a High School paddling teams took two of the three long distance races Saturday at the Wailua River.
The Warrior varsity boys’ teams filled in the top two spots of the Varsity Boys 3-Mile Race, Team A crossing at 22:11:09 followed by Team B stopping the clocks at 23:07:04.
Waimea’s boys filled in the third berth at 23:24:05, just 17 ticks back while Kaua‘i High School’s two teams filled in fourth and fifth places at 23:46:06 for the Raiders’ A Team and 24:27:03 for the Raiders’ B Team.
Kapa‘a also topped the Mixed Varsity 3-Mile race, crossing at 23:56:09 followed by the Red Raiders’ A team at 24:26:03 and Waimea filling in third place at 25:18:05. Kawaikini/Kapaa, an unofficial team, stopped the clocks at 25:33:02 with Kaua‘i’s B team rounding out the field at 27:00:08.
The Kaua‘i Varsity girls team squeaked to a 23-second lead in the Varsity Girls 3-Mile race over Kapa‘a, crossing at 25:36:02 with the Warriors slipping across at 25:59:07. Kawaikini filled in the third berth at 26:17:01 followed by Kaua‘i B (27:32:04) and Waimea (27:47:08).
Mia Pauletto, president of the Garden Island Canoe Racing Association, said Saturday’s regatta was the first race of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation and the only long distance race of the year.
The second regatta takes place Saturday starting at 9 a.m. on the Wailua River with the Junior Varsity girls.
