LIHU‘E — The Alonzo brothers, Daniel and Michael, put the Kapa‘a High School boys varsity soccer team in sole possession of the lead in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer season Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
Daniel Alonzo netted two goals to give the Warriors a 2-0 halftime lead and Michael iced the win with a second-half goal in the 3-0 shutout over Island School.
Kapa‘a got some help from Waimea and Kaua‘i varsity boys who battled to a 2-2 stalemate at Hanapepe Stadium.
Anthony Gammerino asserted the Red Raiders with a goal in the first five minutes of play in the physical matchup where Waimea played without the benefit of its strong defender Wyatt Taniguchi.
Waimea’s Byron Freitas Jr. knotted the game with three minutes showing in the first half for the 1-1 deadlock. But Kaua‘i answered when Lucas Gushikuma, one of the Red Raider captains, footed the ball in the final minute of the first half for the 2-1 bulge.
Coming back under a canopy of words from spectators and coaches, the Menehune’s Jaron Parongao drew a yellow card for unsporting behavior late in the game and both teams battled before Acetyn Emayo stalemated the match in the 44th minute.
Shyla Taniguchi-Simbre got the nod for the sole Menehune goal, which came in the final two minutes of play in the varsity girls match which was punctuated with passing drizzles and a full rainbow over the Kalaheo plateau.
Taniguchi-Simbre’s score, coming off a corner kick late in the game, prevented a shutout in Kaua‘i’s 2-1 edge in the Hanapepe Stadium nightcap.
Kaua‘i, playing against a tough Waimea defense led by Bailey and Kaycee San Agustin-Nordmeier, found a window in the 18th minute when Kylie Kuhlmann broke up the middle and fired a clear shot against Mariyah Oliver, the Waimea goalkeeper.
Kuhlmann’s net was the sole score in the first half.
Malu Vegas was given the credit for the second score which came in heavy traffic at the goalmouth on a corner kick where Kuhlmann and Marissa Ruiz both got pieces of the ball before Vegas settled it into the net.
Earlier in the day, Kaua‘i Junior Varsity girls was a 5-0 winner over the Waimea JV girls and the Kaua‘i JV boys posted a 3-1 edge over the Menehune JV boys.
M. Tamura led the Red Raider JV girls with two scores followed by K. Ibia, W. Gandeza and M. Tangohan.
At Vidinha Stadium, the Kapa‘a JV girls finished with a 3-3 tie against Island School in an exhibition matchup.
