KALALAU – A man suspected of seriously injuring a Japanese visitor Sunday afternoon in Kalalau is being sought by police for questioning. Per a witness account, a woman was thrown from a cliff and sustained a multiple injuries from the 15-foot drop, according to Kaua‘i Police Department officials.
Police are looking for Justin Wynn Klein, age 37, whose last known address is in Kīlauea. Klein is described as a Caucasian male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, with brown hair in a Mohawk haircut, possibly a moustache and a beard, and a tribal band tattoo on his left arm.
Klein is considered dangerous and should not be approached.
Police Dispatch originally received a call at 4:40 p.m. Sunday of an injured female hiker in need of medical assistance.
The victim, age 31, was airlifted late Sunday afternoon near Kalalau Beach by the Kaua’i Fire Department’s Air 1. She was flown to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for treatment, where she is currently in critical condition.
According to police, the woman was camping in Kalalau with a friend.
The Kaua’i Police Department, along with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, have restricted access today to Kalalau via the Ke‘e Beach trailhead to allow for a full investigation.
