KAPA‘A — Karoline just got married to Jesse, but their happiness didn’t last long — Jesse was shot dead soon after the happiest day of the young couple’s life.
Luckily, Jesse didn’t really die; it was just a play that students at Open Source Learning school in Kapa‘a put together for their friends and family Thursday afternoon in their last day of school in 2012.
“Once Loved” was an original play written by student Chloe Rudinoff, who also acted in the play and co-directed it with students Macie Berrett and Amrita Mortell.
“Set in the South in the 1950s, ‘Once Loved’ is a play full of mystery, murder, love and death that will both surprise you and touch your heart,” the play’s program states.
After Jesse, played by Kai Berrett, is murdered, Karoline, played by Halli Holmgren, goes into despair.
Elizabeth, played by Sabryn Rudinoff, was Jesse’s best friend. But once Jesse and Karoline fell in love, Elizabeth felt pushed aside and was sour about it. She was the main suspect. But something just didn’t jive. If she was jealous, she would have murdered Karoline instead.
Karoline’s ex-beau Dallas, played by Chloe Rudinoff, jumps into the scene and begs her to get back together with him.
As it turns out, Dallas was still licking his wounds for having his heart broken by Karoline, and shot Jesse point blank.
“Once Loved,” a Greek tragedy at its best, was completely written, directed and acted by the students at Open Source without any adult help. After all, the school is the only one on the island that follows the Sudbury Valley School model of education, where students decide what and how they learn.
Open Source operates at All Saints Gym in Kapa‘a, where the play was acted.
