LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. Man wishes for new clothes
Paul is 65 years old and lives alone. He used to live with his wife but she was suffering from a lot of physical and also mental illness so she had to be brought to a care home. He is also suffering from mental problems himself. People sometimes take advantage of his kindness and he ends up with no money for himself. Keoki is a 92-year-old man who lives alone. He feels that his family abandoned him so he often goes through periods of depression. He is getting home-delivered meals because he cannot drive. Keoki could use a new outfit to brighten his holiday and maybe go out to dinner with his friend. Case # GZ/H.106
Kupuna would appreciate charity
Keala is a quiet 77-year-old woman who is suffering from dementia. Her younger sister is taking care of her. She is receiving home-delivered meals because she cannot cook herself. Keala could use a new outfit to brighten her holiday and it would be nice to go out to dinner with her sister who is always there for her. Case # GZ/H.107
Walking shoes would bring a big smile
Letty is suffering from diabetes and does not have good blood circulation. She has not gotten over her husband’s death from last year. She receives home-delivered meals because she has difficulty moving. For this holiday season, Letty could use a good pair of walking shoes that she could easily put on. Case # GZ/H.108
Dinner, clothes would brighten couple’s day
Flor and Josie are both receiving Social Security as their income. They live by themselves. Flor is 74 years old is still recovering from his hospitalization due to respiratory problems. He is also suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. He lost 80 pounds due to his numerous medical illnesses and he is now using a walker and wheelchair to get around. They don’t have enough money for all their daily living expenses and the home-delivered meals is a great help to them. Flor needs new clothes for the holiday season and it would also brighten their day if they will be able to get food to celebrate the holiday season. Case # GZ/H.109

Jimmy and Jane live by themselves. They have a daughter who lives on another island and she comes to visit them whenever she can. Jimmy is now suffering from dementia and the wife, Jane, takes care of him. Both of them don’t drive and they use the Para-transit to go to their appointments. They are also receiving home-delivered meals. They are getting Social Security for their income and it is just enough for their daily expenses. Homebound woman would love robe, slippers
Raquel is almost 100 years old but she can still get around. However, because of age, she gets tired fast. She is also suffering from dementia so she has a daughter who is taking care of her. Since she is homebound and only goes out for doctor appointments, it would be a nice surprise to get a new robe or duster and house slippers for her. Case # GZ/H.111
Life Alert would help 95-year-old woman
Lily is 95 years old and wants to continue living in her own house. The house is on the same property as her son’s home. She now shows signs of dementia so the son wants to bring her to a care home but she does not like the idea. She has a hard time walking and she is not really stable on her feet. She already fell a lot of times during this year. A Life Alert system would be good in case she falls down again. She could press the button and someone would be notified to check on her. John Smith has been moved around from family member to family member. He has been in trouble with the law starting at a young age. John is currently on probation and has complied as of yet to everything he should be doing. He has finally found a place where he feels secure and is doing better each day.
