PRINCEVILLE — The Church of the Pacific in Princeville invites you to attend its Living Nativity Pageant — a gift to the people of Kaua‘i to help focus on the real reason for the season of Christmas.
The hills of Princeville will come to life for the retelling of the biblical story of Christmas under the stars on the grassy church amphitheater grounds.
“We haven’t done it for a couple of years, but people in the community started asking about it,” Pastor Glenn Frazier said. “(The play) is only 25 minutes long but it retells the story from the announcement of the birth of Christ.”
The free shows begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22 and Sunday, Dec. 23 and include both live costumed actors and live animals, including goats, horses and chickens. Spot lights will illuminate the home of Mary, the inn and stable, as well as the hillside where the shepherd receives word of Christ’s birth.
“Giving has been synonymous with Christmas, but we are invited to visit the real gift of Christmas, the birth of the Christ Child,” Frazier said. “The Living Nativity Pageant is created in such a way that you can bring your children and family to actually become part of the pageant.”
Children in the community are encouraged to come early to get fitted for angel and shepherd costumes and be part of the drama. No experience in acting is needed as there will be persons to help lead the children through the show, according to Frazier, who will serve as narrator during the performance.
This biblical story of Christmas has been performed for over 10 years at the Church of the Pacific, located at Kapaka Road and Kuhio Highway.
All churches, groups and families are invited to participate and guests are encouraged to bring beach chairs or blankets.
In addition to the pageant, two other special programs will be held at the church over the weekend.
On Friday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. a troop of community actors and musicians will perform “The Shepherd’s Play,” a famous medieval mystery play portraying the adoration of Jesus by the shepherds.
Following the Living Nativity Pageant Dec. 23, the children and youth of the Koloa Union Church will perform “Candy Cane Lane,” a Christmas musical, which teaches that God alone can satisfy our hungry hearts. The musical performance begins at approximately 7 p.m.
“It will be a fun weekend,” Frazier said.
All performances are free and open to the public. For more information contact Jeni Hardy at the Church of the Pacific at 828-6481 or info@church-of-the-pacific.org.
