Why was Santa packing a gun?
Dear Chief Perry,
I am writing to express my utter dismay and disgust that you would allow officers to wear a Santa costume and pack a gun!
What kind of fear-mongering is being promoted? This thoughtless and tasteless act is so out of character for the spirit of aloha!
What kind of treachery were you expecting at a much-loved family event that would warrant this kind of behavior?
I think you owe the community a public apology.

To all of you who have been hurt by my little sister, Staci Gonsalves: My heart hurts for you. No words can make anything better. You will move on.
As for my sister, she will do her best. You might think 5 years is not enough, she deserves more. I don’t know you, I do know my sister and I love her deeply.
I never knew how a sister or brother could love each other. And my sister has hurt me and my children kabillions of times. Not only with money lost — a lot more.
When our brother passed away, for the first time in my 44 years, I felt my love for my sister as I have felt for my brother for 12 years.
That’s a shame, that we did not understand love or affection as siblings should from day one.
Yes, I understand more than you ever will, and do not try to understand this; it will just drive you crazy. Accept it, move on. Karma never passes anyone.
Most of all, you really do not know anything about my sister’s life and what we have gone though. That’s not a sad story, it’s a damn heartbreak.
Healing is starting for her and me. I haven’t been to any of her cases or even a visit, because my family is afraid she will hurt me again. That’s a chance I need to take soon because I love her so much and wish her the best.
Forgive, I ask.

Real Christmas tree smell is worth the frog risk
One of my earliest childhood memories is the Christmas tree smell. It seems that these trees have been under attack lately because of the threat of invasive species and also in an effort to promote “buying local.”
While I don’t know anyone who does not buy into the buying local concept, I will be the one to say it forthright. Our majestic Norfolk Pine, while not even native, just seems not as Christmassy as the Douglas Fir with its distinctive smell or the Noble Fir with its great Christmas stance.
Yes, we have seen a frog or two, but our Hawai‘i agriculture inspectors are all over it.
I know. Our club Mokihana Aquatics has been selling Douglas and Nobles for 20 years as our most successful fundraiser. I can say that they (Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture) are so on it that while the chances for invasive species is high with live trees, they have been doing a great job.
Now for the argument that it burns fossil fuel in an effort to bring trees here, well that’s nutz. The last I read is that Hawai‘i imports 90 percent of all goods to Hawai‘i.
Self-sufficiency should be our priority, and yes, we do need to support buying local, but come on people, this is Christmas. Let us have and enjoy the way we want.
I have many friends who prefer the non-native Norfolk Pine and they will continue to do so. There are also those who don’t believe in Christmas at all. We must respect them also.
But let us not take away what so many in Hawai‘i look forward to. That is the wonderful smell that only a Douglas Fir can produce or the incredible sight of the beautiful Noble Fir.

Glad ‘Dear Abby’ has moved to join crosswords
How pleased I was to see “Dear Abby” on the page with the crosswords and other non-news pieces.
Reading current news first saves coming back to find the fun stuff which I cut out for a different time of the day. It looks good with the family of non-news.
Will you please keep it there? Hopefully other subscribers might ask the same.
