KAPA‘A — Lance Miyashiro of Kapa‘a White finished with 11 points, but Lahainaluna’s Jake Francis and Josh Chapital combined for 27 points to lead the Lunas to a 50-38 showing and clinch the title of the Kapa‘a Warriors Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.
Lahainaluna finished the tournament 3-0 in the standings followed by Kapa‘a White with a 2-1 record along with Maui High School and Kapa‘a Green.
Kaua‘i High School, making a strong showing, finished 0-3 after dropping to Lahainaluna, 63-40 Friday night and being edged out 53-50 by Kapa‘a Green on Saturday, the final day of the tournament.
Waimea High School, being limited to just a trio of buckets during its 74-19 loss at the hands of the Lunas Thursday, rebounded on Friday and Saturday but came up short, losing 51-38 to Kapa‘a Green on Friday and dropping 46-37 in overtime to Maui.
During the Saturday loss, Kalvyn Aboy of Maui finished with 20 points while Peterson Lahip topped the Waimea scoring with 16 points followed by low post Duke Yadao adding 13 points.
Kaua‘i got 21 points from Mikel Moranz followed by Jassem Cumlat adding 10 points in its loss to the Kapa‘a Green who got 13 points from Keali‘i Colipano and 11 points from Mosese Fifita.
Coaches from the participating teams named the student-athlete honorees from each school Friday night. Matthew Cummings got the nod for Kapa‘a Green and Marlon Cudiamat was awarded for the Kapa‘a White.
Chavis Garma was recognized for Kaua‘i, Nick Vierra got the nod for Lahainaluna, Joshua Viloria was selected from Maui and Briggs Agu received the accolades for Waimea.
Kapa‘a High School next travels to O‘ahu, Dec. 19 through 22 where it will be meeting Waialua, IPA, Christian Academy and Lejardin Academy.
It will host the Kapa‘a Holiday Tournament at Bernice Hundley Gym from Dec. 27 through 29. That’s ahead of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball season which starts Jan. 2 when Waimea travels to Kaua‘i with the Junior Varsity tipping off at 5:30 p.m.
The varsity squads will be in action approximately 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
Kapa‘a will see action on Jan. 5 when it hosts Kaua‘i starting at 5:30 p.m.
