WAIMEA — Dylan Pizarro of Oreland, Pa., is enjoying his first Christmas in one of the western-most towns in the county.
“He’s just eight months old, and this is his first experience with Christmas,” said Dylan’s mom, Melissa, Dec. 1 at Hofgaard Park in Waimea. “This is his first Christmas.”
Dylan was one of the many children Santa Claus visited while waiting on Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. to arrive for the lighting of Waimea town.
Using a variety of ice breakers, Santa, on a break from his elves at the North Pole, broke through with a double shaka, refining his enthusiastic approach with bouts of high fives, knuckles and even an ET point to get youngsters to respond.
“This (lighting ceremony) is something new we’re doing in Waimea,” said Penny Young of the West Kaua‘i Main Street program. “It sets the stage for the big Christmas Lighted Parade, which will take place Dec. 22.”
Businesses and residences take on a holiday flavor with hundreds of Christmas lights and decorations, inviting people to browse through the town while enjoying some dinner and snacks from the many participating establishments.
The lights are on through the holidays with no admission to view the displays.
