T’Ryanne Sakamoto was one of three double winners when the Garden Isle Racing Association presented the Junior Dragster awards at a recent Christmas Awards Banquet at the Wailua Marina Restaurant.
Sakamoto, finishing in fifth place in the year-end standings with 455 points, was one of three recipients of the first Academic Excellence awards. The award, sponsored by Mike Olivas, is presented to the child with the highest Grade Point Average, one award being presented to an elementary school student, one to a middle school student and one to a high school student.
“We thank Mike Olivas for believing in the kids and for his generous sponsorship toward this program,” said Tracie Sakamoto in an email. “This is the first year, ever that an Academic Excellence Award is being presented.”
Sakamoto, a student at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, was the middle school recipient.
Devin Almarza, a student at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School, was the Academic Excellence award winner for the elementary school division, going on to place 265 points in the overall year-end standings.
Lawson Fernandes, a student at Kapa‘a High School, was the Academic Excellence award recipient for the high school division. He also finished seventh overall with 360 points in the year-end standings.
Kelsie Iida-Vierra topped the Points Leaders for the 2012 racing year with 630 points followed by Nalu Barros getting the runner-up berth on 575 points.
Zailea Lawrence-White filled in the third place berth with 535 points followed by Donoven Gomes at 490 points.
Sakamoto followed in fifth place followed by Courtney Brock at 390 points and Fernandes, Almarza and Lexie Ramaila with 150 points.
