LIHU‘E — A Hanapepe man was sentenced to a year in jail and probation for felony family abuse Wednesday in 5th Circuit Court.
Bryce Hokulani Akuna, 28, was in court for five cases involving family abuse, harassment, choking, second-degree burglary, Temporary Restraining Order violation, property damage, theft and assault.
Three of the cases were dismissed in an Oct. 30 plea deal. Akuna was sentenced Wednesday for felony abuse of family or household member and re-sentenced on a second-degree burglary charge.
Defense attorney Mark Zenger represented Akuna for the re-sentencing case. Warren Perry represented him for the abuse charge.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin represented the state.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe said the defendant could be facing a full prison term, but said the court would work with felony probation. He was give credit for time served and ordered to take an alternatives to domestic violence course.
Akuna was sentenced to HOPE Probation (Hawai‘i’s Opportunity Probation with Enforcement). It is designed for closer supervision with immediate sanctions and the possibility of prison for non-compliance, Watanabe said.
