Hula Pie from Wranglers Steakhouse was the perfect way to top the Hanapepe Pink Bubble Gums’ soccer season.
Coach Josh and Anna Mecham of the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 940 Girls Under 12 team treated the team to a season-ending dinner at the Waimea restaurant to celebrate the team’s accomplishment.
Following the AYSO Region 940 Regional Championship at the Hanapepe Stadium, the Pink Bubble Gums entered the 2012 Will Veeck soccer tournament, matching up against the AYSO Region 941 No. 2 seed during the semifinals.
“Both teams played to a nail-biting, parent-screaming 2-2 tie following regulation play,” said Robert Ishikawa, a team parent, in an email. “Hanapepe Pink Bubble Gums finished by defeating the Region 941 in an exciting shoot-out performance.”
The win in the semifinals advanced the Pink Bubble Gums to meet the Koloa Angry Birds coached by Kevin Bukoski.
“Both teams matched up very well and both teams had many shots on the opponent’s goal, making the championship of the Girls Under 12 division a very exciting game to watch,” Ishikawa said. “The Pink Bubble Gums went on to defeat the Angry Birds, 2-0 in the well-fought battle. Overall, the Hanapepe and Koloa teams faced each other five times during the 2012 AYSO soccer season.”
To cap the exciting season, coaches Josh and Anna Mecham treated the team to its dinner with all the fixings, including pork ribs and fried chicken plate, steamed vegetables served with either mashed potatoes, rice or French Fries and topped with “a huge belly-rubbing” Hula pie.
Team members received a special AYSO championship shirt printed up by Kirk Correa.
Team members include Leiko Yamauchi, Jaziana Ahuna, Shandalyn Kuhlmann, Tori Ishikawa, Cameron O’Day, Sara Santos, Niri Santiago, Gabby Peleras, Kelsey Tomimoto, Ashley Mecham, Kari Correa, Brooke Frasco and Taige Mueller.
“What a great season to walk away from,” Ishikawa said.
