HANAPEPE — Baseball players from 7 years old to high school age are invited to participate in a baseball clinic Dec. 30 at the Hanapepe Ball Park.
Ten collegiate baseball players from Kaua‘i, college coaches and Major League Baseball scouts will lead the clinic, said coach Kirk Correa.
“This is a great opportunity for these Kaua‘i college student-athletes to give back to Kaua‘i where they started playing ball,” Correa said in an email. “Dallas Correa, catcher for the University of the Pacific, remembers attending a similar clinic in Lihu‘e when he was 8 years old. He was fortunate to receive a signed autographed glove from former Texas Ranger standout Micah Furtado, a Kapa‘a High School graduate and playing for Lewis & Clark at that time.”
The Kaua‘i collegiate players will lead the clinic for youth aged 7 through 14. The High School Showcase will be led by the college coaches and MLB scouts, Kirk Correa said.
“The experience opened my eyes to opportunities which I could strive for,” Dallas Correa said in the email. “For the same reason, I want to do the same for younger players.”
Registered players will receive a gift from the college players. Registration forms for the clinic will be available from local schools, or through the players’ community baseball associations.
Registration fee is $10 per player if registration is complete by Dec. 15 and includes a T-shirt and lunch for the younger players. High school players will receive dinner. The fee rises to $15 if registering after Dec. 15.
Kirk Correa said he is also welcoming donations from any community business or organization that would like to support the event.
Deadline for event sponsors is Saturday for inclusion on the event posters which will be posted at locations around the island.
For those who sponsor after the Dec. 1 deadline, sponsors’ banners will be posted at the Dec. 30 clinic.
Half of the proceeds from this clinic will go to support the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Hawai‘i.
Parents are also welcome to listen to the college players and college coaches speak about what it takes to be a college player, at a presentation from noon to 1 p.m. The players and coaches will speak on not only playing ability, but academics as well.
