WAILUA — Jonathan Jay said the goal of placing yellow ribbons on trees along Wailua Beach is to make the invisible, visible.
Jay was one of several individuals involved in what he described as a ribbon-wrapping party Monday along Kuhio Highway fronting Wailua Beach.
He said if the multi-use path continues along its proposed route, trees within the 11-foot designation will be removed.
The trees are impacted not only by the multi-use path, but the associated re-grading along the beach, Jay said.
“Right now, the trees are the only thing between the ocean and the road,” Jay said. “People drive along this corridor every day and by placing yellow ribbon on the trees, hopefully they will see the impact the tree removal will have.”
Kaua‘i County Council member Dickie Chang happened to see the activity while driving by and stopped to find out what was taking place.
“Wednesday is my final meeting as a council member,” Chang said. “But I’m doing my due diligence and trying to find out what is going on.”
Jay said the subject of erosion and the multi-use path is on the agenda (C 2012-448) for the Wednesday council meeting and he wanted to make sure people are aware of it.
The agenda item is a communication from Councilmember KipuKai Kuali‘i requesting the presence of the Director of Planning and a representative from the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant Program to provide an update on the erosion occurring at Wailua Beach, and the impact that it may have on the multi-use path in that specific area.
Joining Jay in marking the trees scheduled for removal were Kip and Sharon Goodwin, James Alalem and Ray Catania.
“We are doing this so more people who drive by can see some of the negative effects of the present bike path plans,” Jay said in an email. “This vegetation is vital in holding the beach together against erosion from wave action.”
