PUHI — A tale about 7-year-old taiko player Sage Cua earned the top award in the recent 2012 Student Television Network Challenge, said Kevin Matsunaga, instructor for the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media class.
Four students from the Advanced Media Class at CKMS, Sydney Brady, Sharae Cua, Danica Ola and Lindsey Nakea-Tresler took the challenge and finished with the top award in the middle school division.
“Their story about 7-year-old taiko drummer Sage Cua earned them first place in the middle school competition,” Matsunaga said in an email. “Another Hawai‘i school, Waianae Intermediate, took second place in the competition.”
Matsunaga said that all schools across the United States were able to enter in the 2012 STN Challenge. All the students work with the same topic and create a story in just six days.
The CKTV Advanced Media team’s winning submission was titled “He’s Got the Beat.”
“The students, three eighth-graders and a seventh-grader, sacrificed their sleep and free time to take on this challenge,” Matsunaga said.
They were followed by the Waianae Intermediate School team in second place with “Waianae Intermediate School.”
Maui Waena Intermediate School earned honorable mention in the middle school division for its “Ta-Da” production to give Hawai‘i schools three placements in five places in the middle school division, according to results posted on the STN website.
Moanalua High School topped the high school film division with its “Love Bites.”
Moanalua High School took third place in the high school sports feature division, the top spot going to Waianae High School for its “Culture Of Sports.”
Coming on the heels of this announcement, Matsunaga said the CKTV Media team is hosting a fundraising breakfast on Sunday from 6:30 to 11 a.m. at the school’s cafeteria.
Proceeds from this and other fundraising efforts will help the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School media students go to California to compete in the 2013 National STN convention.
Breakfast will include miso soup, Portuguese sausage and the usual breakfast offerings. Door prizes will be available along with games, face painting for the kids and bingo games starting at 7 a.m.
To go along with the hearty breakfast, the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School Creative Arts Keiki and the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School Chorus will offer entertainment.
Proceeds from the next CKMS Street Fair scheduled for the second Saturday in January also will help the kids with their projects.
