PO‘IPU — “Papa” Robbrecht Troost said Tobey Troost, 7, is on a roll.
The Island School third-grader (he skipped first grade) finished the American Youth Soccer Association with 36 goals for the season while playing with the Under 8 Lihu‘e Venom under coach Mark Randall.
“I know they don’t keep score in AYSO Under 8 division,” said Robbrecht. “But I do. Tobey’s team finished undefeated, 8-0 on the season. He could have scored close to 70 goals, but toward the end, was passing so the other players could score.”
The youngster was unfazed by the praise, instead playing kendama with his friend (like cousin, Tobey said) Micah Alvarez, 7, who is a second-grader at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.
The boys were helping Robbrecht at a craft fair Saturday. Robbrecht is a ceramic artist who uses a unique zinc oxide glazing process to create a variety of plates, coasters, bowls and vases.
During the season, Tobey said his highest number of goals was six, or a dual hat trick with three goals scored, in a single game. With 36 goals under his belt, the youngster averaged at least a hat trick in each of his outings during the eight-game season.
The accomplishment paled compared to the fact the team finished the perfect season.
“Undefeated,” Tobey said. “We’re going to play in the Kaua‘i Soccer Association for Coach Ron Kosen and Team Makani when the spring season opens. We already started practice.”
Robbrecht said Tobey’s been playing soccer since he was 2 years old, and he also plays baseball and tennis. Tobey added that he and Micah are also going to play basketball for Team Central in the county’s basketball league when it starts in January.
“They’re undefeated, too,” Tobey said.
