HONOLULU — Kate Machorek, 14, became the third Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics swimmer in three years to win the overall high point award at the Hawaiian Swimming Senior Championship held over the weekend at the University of Hawai‘i swimming complex on O‘ahu.
Machorek dominated the distance events, taking the 1650 Yard Freestyle on a 17:22.61 swim, which shaved 53.98 off her seeded swim and the 500 Yard Freestyle where she touched the wall at 5:04.09.
Over the course of three days the meet was held, Machorek accumulated 100 points, placing her in a tie for the win with Jasmine Mau, 16, of the Kamehameha Swim Club.
Machorek, making the A final in each event, posted personal best swims in the 200 Yard (2:09.94) and the 400 Yard (4:35.91) Individual Medley events.
Previous SKA overall high point winners at the Senior Championship include Anya Littlefield in June 2012 and Yasmine Ware in June 2011.
Ware, 15, finished fourth overall at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, taking the 50 Yard Freestyle in 23.63 and ending second in the 100 Yard Freestyle (52.76) and the 100 Yard Butterfly (57.30).
Sophie Britzman, 17, and Tambrina Fairbanks, 16, swimming together for Kaua‘i High School when the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation swimming season starts, combined to earn seventh place in the team standings with four swimmers, earning new Sectional relay cuts in the 200-, 400- and 800-yard Freestyle Relay and the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
On her own merit, Fairbanks finished seventh in the 200 Yard Breaststroke on a 2:33.84 swim and made the “B” finals in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:14.54) and the 400 Yard IM (5:07.39), the swim earning her a 14-second drop. Overall, Fairbanks finished 38th overall.
Britzmann stopped the clock at 5:06.33 in the 400 Yard IM where she made the “B” final and finished 15th overall.
“This was a huge weekend for our girls,” said SKA Coach Billy Brown. “Great swims by all four girls and they hammered out those four Sectional relay cuts as well.”
The Senior Championships allow swimmers to compete with the fastest swimmers in the state, regardless of age. Swimmers ranging from 12 to 27 years old from across the state go head-to-head in the meet over three days.
SKA will be hosting its home meet on Dec. 1, a “last chance” to earn qualifying times for the state championships scheduled for Dec. 14 through 17 on O‘ahu.
