LIHU‘E — The defendant in a 2006 murder case has bonded out of custody.
Darren Hisao Galas, 40, of Kalaheo, made his $300,000 bond on Nov. 16, and is now out of custody from Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center. Galas will remain free as long as he is compliant with the terms and conditions of his bond, which includes an ankle monitor and daily supervision under the state Department of Public Safety.
Judge Kathleen Watanabe of the 5th Circuit Court allowed a reduction of bail from $1 million to $300,000 on Nov. 14. The judge ruled in the alternative after denying a request for supervised release.
Galas is accused of killing his estranged wife, Sandra Galas, 27, in 2006. He was indicted on a second-degree murder charge on Oct. 31.
Galas is represented by private attorney Michael Green. A trial date is set for April 1, 2013.
The state objected to the reduction of bail based on the potential of flight risk with serious charges. The objection noted the potential for the defendant to pose a danger to himself or the community.
Green said that Galas has no prior criminal history, has held stable employment, and continues to provide for his two children, a wife and her three children.
