Waimea High School cheer squad repeated as the Medium Division champions Saturday at the Zippy’s Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Cheerleading State Championships.
Announced as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions Wednesday, the Waimea Menehune squad became the first Neighbor Island team to top the Medium Division last year, successfully defended its title at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu.
Waimea collected 334 points in its repeat as the Medium Division champions, surpassing the Moanalua Menehune by 12 points, states an announcement by the HHSAA Saturday.
Following Waimea and Moanalua, Kaiser (292.5), Punahou (291), Kamehameha-Maui (277.5), Lahainaluna (273), Leilehua (267.5), Waiakea (263), Kea‘au (249) and Kailua (239.5) round out the Top 10 in the Medium Division.
Kaua‘i High School cheer squad, being allowed to participate in the state competition by the HHSAA, finished fifth in the Large Division with 250 points.
Radford repeated as the Large Division champion, collecting 334 points over Kamehameha-Kapalama with 302 points.
Waimea, under coach Roxanne Cardejon, returns home to Kaua‘i Sunday evening, a parent said.
