LIHU‘E — Special traffic advisories will be in effect starting at 7 a.m. for the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i 10th Annual Old Koloa Sugar Mill Run.
The Ala Kinoiki, or Koloa bypass road, will be closed from the Maluhia Road junction from 6:30 to 11 a.m. to accomodate the race which starts from the junction.
Kaua‘i Police Department officers will be manning the closures and motorists should expect delays in the affected area.
Race Day registration will take place at the Anne Knudsen Park pavilion from 6:30 a.m. Registration fee at the table is $40 per participant for either the 5K, 10K, 10-Mile runs, and a 5K Walk and includes breakfast following the race and an event t-shirt or tank top.
The 10-mile race starts at 7 a.m. followed by the start of the 10K race at 7:15 a.m. and the 5K events starting at 7:30 a.m.
During the packet pickup at the Kukui Grove Center, Friday, race officials estimated approximately 500 people registered for the different events with more approaching the table to register.
The support demonstrated by the Old Sugar Mill Run in 2011 generated enough funds to allow the Rotary Club of Kaua‘i to provide five students with $1,000 scholarships including three nursing students and two technology students.
Nicholas Clark of Lihu‘e was the top 10-Mile finisher in the 2011 event, completing the course in 1:01:56, or a 6:11 pace, followed by Alan Reynolds of Sausalito, Calif. crossing a minute later (1:02:49, or a 6:16 pace).
Basil Scott, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation run timer and a running coach, topped the 10K event on a 40:25 run, or 6:31 pace followed by Mike Slattery of Albuquerque, New Mexico at 42:04, or a 6:47 pace. Marie Foster of Koloa, the third overall finisher, was the first female to cross in the event at 43:18, or a 6:59 pace.
Joshua Herr, the Kaua‘i High School cross country standout, topped the 5K event on a 17:41 run, or a 5:42 pace, followed by Ryan Peres of Koloa at 18:45, or a 6:02 pace.
Joy Claypoole, the Island School cross country standout for the girls, finished the 5K fourth overall on a 20:52 run, or a 6:43 pace.
Jacob Punzal of Koloa topped the 5K Walkers, crossing 35th overall on a 27:05, or 8:44 pace.
