LIHU‘E — In honor of the Episcopal saints who founded the Episcopal Church in Hawai‘i 150 years ago, St. Michael and All Angels church will celebrate the lives and ministry of King Kamahamaha IV and Queen Emma all weekend long.
The celebration kicks off tonight with the Kamehameha IV and Emma Festival — a benefit concert, reception and silent auction beginning at 6 p.m. with pupus, Hawaiian music and drinks.
Concerts and performances begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Wally and Polei Palmeira, Edward Punua, Haunani Kaua‘i, Wailana Dasalia, Kimo Kaholokula, Henry Adam Curtis, Jeff Mira, Mahealani Yamashita, Mark Rossi, Pua Rossi-Fukino and the Kaua‘i Community College Hula Club.
Dessert and coffee will follow at 8:15 p.m.
Tickets for tonight’s Kamehameha IV and Emma Festival are $25 and can be purchased at the church office. Tickets are limited.
On Saturday, St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church will host its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring a variety of jewelry, handmade items, Hawaiian crafts, baked goods and lau lau plate lunches. Booths will be set up in the Parish Hall and on the lawn.
“It’s going to be really wonderful,” organizer Lindy Beer said. “We have a record amount of crafters and vendors this year … 40 vendors.”
All proceeds from the Holiday Craft Fair will benefit St. Michael’s Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, the island’s largest food pantry, which distributes groceries to approximately 100 people every Wednesday morning. Loaves and Fishes is staffed by volunteers and supported with donations of food and money from its parishioners, as well as other churches and organizations.
“(Loaves and Fishes) has just grown with the economic conditions,” Beer said. “The needs of people have grown tremendously.”
Beer says both the festival and craft fair will honor Hawaiian history.
“Both events are done every year,” she said.
The weekend-long celebration concludes with church services at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 and 9:45 a.m. Sunday, all honoring King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. There will be music and hula during the 9:45 a.m. service.
A free lu‘au will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 18.
The silent auction will be open through the weekend and will close at noon on Sunday. Several auction items are only available for online bidding and can be viewed by visiting http://www.32auctions.com/organizations/2215/auctions/5689. Items include travel adventures, hotel and condo stays, inter-island air travel and rental car vouchers.
