LIHU‘E — The Garden Island Motorcycle Club and the Kaua‘i Motocross Racing Association are hosting the fourth annual Charity Poker Run on Sunday in Oma‘o.
The Poker Run’s admission fee is food donations, which will be given to the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank. In addition to the admission, donations will be accepted at Suzuki Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Harley Davidson, Kalaheo Steak and Ribs, Midpac Auto and Kuhio Motors in Kapa‘a.
“Last year we were able to come up with 1,200 pounds of food,” said Bertram Almeida, president of The Garden Island Motorcycle Club and caretaker of the Oma‘o riding area. “This year our goal is to raise 5,000 pounds.”
The event will have four different classes for various levels of experience including D Class (beginner and quads), C Class (novice), B Class (intermediate) and A Class (expert). Both A and B Classes will have two gas checks, and the C Class will have one gas check.
“We do this event to give back to the people,” Almeida said. “It is all about providing food to the people for the holidays.”
The registration fee is $20 and all proceeds will benefit the Billy Ruman Medical Relief Fund.
In addition to the Poker Run itself, The Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank is also benefiting from the assistance from other businesses who are sponsoring the Poker Run. One of these companies is Da Crack.
Not only is the restaurant helping to promote the event, but on Saturday, 100 percent of all money taken in by the restaurant will be donated to the food bank.
“It takes all kinds of businesses and people coming together to make these events happen,” Almeida said.
“It takes a lot of dedication from everyone involved”
The gates open at 6:30 a.m., with registration starting at 7 a.m. and the race following at 9 a.m. For more information contact Almeida at 651-3000.
Da Crack is located at 2827 Po‘ipu Rd. in Koloa and the hours on Saturday are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
