Mahalo to John and his loving example
On Saturday, Oct. 27, a multitude of people gathered at Anahola Beach Park, meticulously organized for the services of John Ornellas. What we didn’t know of him, we found out through the testimony of those who shared his life, and in doing so, you knew then that he came full circle. One had to be present to hear the stories which rendered laughter and tears at the same time.
John was the first documented person on Kaua‘i to contact Polio, which left him with a disability he never allowed to impede accomplishing the various skills he achieved. A fisherman, celebrated dabbler with chickens, and a great hunter whose hunting prowess led to a host of funny stories, closing with his desired resting place. He will rest on a mountain very few have been to where he found the beauty and peaceful serenity unequaled to another setting.
In his short life, John accomplished so much yet there was nothing he loved more than his family, siblings and fellow man, indicated by the presence of many. People from all over brought food and prepared the luncheon, which obliged nearly 800 people until the sun set.
Standing out in the crowd was the quiet presence of many young men and boys who came to say aloha to the humble man who sat with his wife season after season in the same seat to watch the community and high school basketball games. He was more than just a faithful fan, he and his wife gave generously year after year to take care of the needs of these basketball students.
When it was his time to say aloha to this portion of his life, he was allowed the peace and blessing of his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He, no doubt was met by Our Lord who said, “Welcome Home my Good and Faithful Servant.” “What you did to the least of my brethren, you did to Me”.
Mahalo John Ornellas for your loving example; a testament to our youth, your family and all those you touched.

HCT brings Christmas in November
I recently attended the opening night of the Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre Production of “Scrooge.” Having participated in a very minor way on the sets, I was in awe of the amount of intricate detail of the production.
Congratulations to all dedicated volunteers who make the sets, make the costumes, audition and participate in this production! Countless hours are volunteered to bring “Scrooge” to life for our Kaua‘i ‘ohana to enjoy.
The larger than life characters were so enthusiastic in their portrayals of this classic Christmas story. The children in the audience squealed in delight at the miniature puppet show, the street vendors, the giant ghost, and of course the giant moving clock could not go unnoticed.
I applaud the parents of the actors who so genuinely encourage their children to participate in the Children’s Theatre. The hours of driving them to rehearsal, practicing lines and supporting them in the audience tells me that we are a community that enjoys the arts, and we should all strive to support the efforts of Hawai‘i Children’s Theatre in any way we can.
Thank you so much for bringing Christmas in November!

Faith and hope work together in perfect accord
I would like to comment on Lama Tashi’s letter on Nov. 12 concerning the idea of faith and hope negating the law of karma.
I am confused by his comment on this. Faith is one of the five spiritual faculties (faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom or insight) that the Buddha taught to bring balance to our minds.
Inspiration can be the beginning of faith, filling us with love and devotion. If this inspiration is not tempered with wisdom or insight, it can become “blind faith.”
And when we experience our own personal truth blended together with wisdom and understanding, we no longer need verification by external sources such as teachers, books or groups. Our faith becomes unshakable.
The law of karma is similar if not the same as the physics law of causality, i.e. cause and effect.
“Whatever we do, however we act, creates how we become, how we will be, and how the world will be around us.” (J. Kornfield).
I don’t find these two concepts to be in conflict or mutually exclusive. I find them working in perfect accord.
As to hope, I believe that was the only thing left at the bottom of Pandora’s box after she released suffering into the world. Thanks for starting this dialogue, I was so sick of political stuff!

‘Scrooge’ is a must see
Twenty years of “musicals” times 50-plus actors and members of the back stage crews, plus many months of rehearsals and production hours — Kaua‘i is blessed with this year production of “Scrooge, the Musical.” Ed Eaton has mastered a Broadway favorite with his brilliant cast and crew.
I am honored to be part of this show and excited to have two more weekends to showcase the children and adults working in harmony to during the start of the holiday season.
Please come and support us, you will be blessed with a beautiful show!
