LIHU‘E — Ho‘ike Kaua‘i Community Television producers recently earned five first-place honors during the 2012 Alliance for Community Media Western Access Video Excellence awards program.
The annual program recognizes outstanding achievement in video production and community relevance, said J Robertson, Ho‘ike director.
This year’s program was held in conjunction with the ACM Western Region Conference in Sacramento, Calif., and was made up of 29 categories with professional and non-professional divisions.
“It is extremely rewarding to see Kaua‘i gain the recognition it so richly deserves,” Robertson said in a release. “These wonderfully talented producers and the incredible subject matter they portray is such an achievement considering the significant level of competition which exist in the community media arena.”
Ho‘ike producers were finalists in nine categories overall, including Kaua‘i Police Department Sgt. Rod Green in the Programming for Youth and Families for “KPAL Youth Forum” and James Alalem’s “Honoring the Bones and Stones” in Special Audience Programming. Robertson noted that these programs were judged from nearly 400 entries in the various categories.
Top honors went to Roger Olsen, manager at the Ho‘ike Common Ground Media Technology Center, who ended with two top honors — “Fire Dancers” taking the award in professional Performing Arts category and “Bad Ass Granny” getting top billing in the professional Entertainment Variety programming category.
Kainoa Palama and Bob Sato earned the top prize in Sports Entertainment for “Kaua‘i Classic: Episode One” and first place honors in the Sports Coverage division was awarded to Michael Alonzo for “Alonzo Sports — 2012 Roller Derby.”
Jul3ia Astatkie and Cleland Austin, co-producers, earned top award for “This Mirror Life” in the Musical Programming division, one of the most highly competitive divisions.
