HANAPEPE — Both lanes of Kaumuali‘i Highway opened to traffic at 7 p.m., as crews continue to fight a brush fire that in Hanapepe.
According to a Kaua‘i County news release, no homes or structures are threatened by the blaze, but due to its close proximity to Kaumuali‘i Highway, near Mile Marker 17, both lanes of the highway were shut down shortly before 5 p.m. The eastbound lane was reopened at roughly 6 p.m.
Engines 5, 6, and 7 along with Trucks 4, 5, 6, and 7 remain on scene with Rescue 3 personnel. Air 1 was assisting in the effort but nightfall forced the chopper to withdraw for the evening.
The fire is believed to be over five acres in size. The cause is unknown at this time.
