HANALEI — A California man was rescued after he was swept out to sea by strong currents Monday near Aliomanu.
According to Kaua‘i Fire Department, the Kaiakea Fire Station received a call from dispatch around 4 p.m. Monday regarding a boogie boarder in distress at Aliomanu.
A 51-year-old male from Citrus Heights, Calif., was caught in the channel and drifting out to sea, roughly 1 mile out, according to county spokesperson Sarah Blane. Engine 8, Truck 8, Rescue 3 and Air 1 responded, and personnel paddled out to meet the fatigued man with a rescue board.
A member from the rescue team in the Billy Pugh net dropped from Air 1 and picked up the victim and returned him to shore. There were no reported medical concerns aside from exhaustion.
The man was released at the scene to family members.
