The Waimea High School girls volleyball team was defeated in two straight sets, Friday during its battle for fifth place in Division II of the New City Nissan/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball State Championships on O‘ahu.
Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy got a dozen kills from Gabbie Ewing to lead HPA to the 2-0 win, 27-26, 25-18.
This was the Menehune’s second loss at the state championship despite getting strong play from its forces led by Mariyah Oliver ending the outing with eight kills and a pair of aces.
Lei Alejandro added six kills, joined by Kawena Warren, the middle opposite Oliver, who finished with six kills and a block.
Paige Ando added four kills and Baily San Agustin-Nordmeier recorded 23 assists and an ace, compared to HPA’s Nua Pott’s 16 assists.
Joining Ewing on the line, Tiana Reynolds posted eight kills, McKenna Ventura finished with three kills, a block and an ace. Carina Verhulsdonk added a pair of aces in the win.
