HONOLULU — The Waimea High School Menehune were successful in round one of the Division II Girls Volleyball State Championship taking down Kailua in four sets Tuesday night. The victory would put the Menehune into the quarterfinals to take on the No. 4 ranked Ka‘u High School Wednesday night at the Kalani Gym on O‘ahu.
The Menehune rolled through the regular KIF season to the tune of 12-0 record and avoided the taste of defeat. Going head to head with the No. 4 ranked Ka‘u would prove to be Waimea’s toughest test to date.
Unfortunately, the Menehune would go on to be defeated in four sets, 25-21, 23-25, 15-25, 22-25.
For the Menehune, it will be its first loss of the season bringing the team to a 13-1 combined record on the year.
The loss will drop the Menehune to the consolation bracket of the tournament where they took on Hana of Maui Thursday night. Scores were not available by press time.
If Waimea is able to come away with the victory against Hana, they will compete for the fifth place slot in the tournament against either La Pietra of Honolulu or Hawai‘i Prepartory Academy of the Big Island.
No. 4 Ka‘u will move on to take on the No. 1 ranked St. Francis of Honolulu in the semi-finals.
The winner of the semi-final match will move on to the state championship match against either No. 2 Farrington High School or No. 3 Seaburt Hall.
