Shaylene for Kaua‘i
I’m writing to express my thoughts for Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho. Our home was burglarized before Christmas in 2000. We were devastated. Our oldest son was expected home from college and everything was in a downward spiral. The day of the robbery, my youngest son came home early from school, the beginning of winter break for him.
Fortunately for him, as he was entering the house, friends called him to go with them to the beach and he never entered the home, as the burglar was still there. We’re grateful to KPD, for arresting the robber that evening. This experience left our family with scars in our lives.
My youngest son was afraid to enter his own home. The burglar not only damaged our lives but many others in the area. Thanks to Shaylene, she made sure the person who robbed us and others got 18-plus years in prison.
Our Prosecuting Attorney has the best victim witness program in place. Someone from that office is always in contact with us regarding this situation, even after 12 years. Shaylene attends parole hearings on O‘ahu to be sure the robber is not released any time soon from prison.
She invites us to write letters to the parole board with our testimony. Shaylene’s office made sure my son got the counseling he needed to overcome his anxieties from the burglary. Our total loss at our home was $10,000-plus. Our claim was so extensive, our homeowner’s insurance canceled our policy.
Shaylene’s office extended their assistance with helping us with our insurance company.
Shaylene’s office has been very supportive not only in this incident but with other cases. Shaylene and her staff are always willing to help, listen, support and always ask “what can we do for you”?
That’s truly the aloha spirit. That’s an office with compassion for people. My family and I support Shaylene for Prosecuting Attorney. Now that you know our journey with Shaylene, we ask that you support her, too.

I may be wrong but …
After watching the Senatorial debates, here are my thoughts:
1. Mazie Hirono has not, in her six years as a member of the House, been able to enact legislation to benefit the people of Hawai‘i except for that Pre-Plus program she claims to have sponsored.
2. She bathes in reflected glories from other politicians of her own party since she does not have a record of achievement of her own to stand on.
3. She instills fear that if she is not re-elected dire consequences will happen to Hawai‘i.
For these reasons — and more — I am voting for Linda Lingle.

More on Polihale
Interesting that Ron Agor would characterize my recent (Oct. 25) letter regarding Linda Lingle and the Polihale Park project as “so uninformed,” as I was intimately involved with that effort from the initial idea to the last coat of white paint on the boulders lining the ditches. Before we began that work, my cohort Bruce Pleas (a guy I like to think of as “the best council person who was never a council person”) got in touch with then-Gov. Lingle’s Kaua‘i liaison to see if any assistance might be forthcoming from the Lingle administration but got no response. Like I wrote before: “To her credit, Lingle DID stay out of our way and didn’t come anywhere near the place …,” which is basically what Ron says in his letter.
We did work closely with Steve Thompson of State Parks and Laura Theilen of the DLNR to ensure that the project would be completed successfully and, most importantly, safely. Ron’s references to possible problems with union workers are purely speculative, as there was no work planned to begin with, therefore no jobs to be taken away from anyone.
I understand that as the former Chairman of the Kaua‘i Republican Party, and being a staunch Lingle supporter, Ron Agor is trying to put a positive spin on his girl’s exaggerated claims. But if “working with the community” means taking credit for other peoples ideas and hard work, Lingle might want to back away from that line in these final days of what I hope will be an unsuccessful campaign — it just doesn’t play well out here in the real world. If not, I might suggest some possible new campaign slogans for her, like “Yes, YOU can!” or maybe “Go ahead, knock yourselves out!”
On a personal level, I’ve been inspired to try out the “Lingle/Polihale” principal at home. Tonight, I’m going to tell my wife “Honey, I would like to work with you by allowing you to do all the dishes, wash all my clothes, AND mow the lawn.” That should go over well, yea? And since I’m not running for anything, I won’t even try to take credit for her hard work!
