The Kaua‘i girls bowling team gave up 29 pins to Waimea for its only second-place finish in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling season which closed last Thursday with the Kaua‘i girls and boys bowling teams finishing in first place.
After clinching the KIF title two weeks ago, the Kaua‘i bowling teams were led by Darcie Vea for the girls, Vea rolling a high 176 in Game 3 followed closely by Malia Garcia (140-166-152) to give the Red Raider girls a 2004 pinfall over Waimea’s 1867 and Kapa‘a’s 1722.
Randy Iloreta rolled two consecutive 189 games before dropping to 171 in game 3, but led the Red Raider boys to a 2,263 pinfall over Waimea’s 2,148 and Kapa‘a’s 1,982 total.
Despite Iloreta’s 189 in game 2, the Raider boys dropped to Waimea by 49 pins, 675-626, behind Chase Ueno rolling a 185, his best game of the day.
Kapa‘a boys, behind the high roll of Jeorge Robert Ho (160) and Drew Lopez Nishikuni (155) in game 2, trailed Waimea by just three pins, 675-672, both Ho and Lopez Nishikuni rolling their best games in the second game.
Lacie Montemayor peaked with a 157 in Game 2 for Waimea to lead the Menehune wahine to its edge over Kaua‘i, Montemayor getting help from Selena Perez-Suniga who finished with a 145, her best game of the day.
Kapa‘a’s Angelika Celia Questin continued to lead the Kapa‘a girls, opening with a 159, dipping to 142 and ending at 152.
The KIF girls season finished with Vea leading the girls individualists with a 166.67 average over nine games heading into the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships, which open Thursday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
Questin holds the No. 2 individualist spot with a 163.00 average over nine games with Montemayor in the No. 3 spot with a 162.67 average.
Iloreta tops the boys individualists with a 197.33 average over nine games followed by Clarence Sembrano Jr., who did not bowl in the final outing, at 180.56 average and Ueno at 176.44 average in the No. 3 spot.
