HONOLULU — The Kaua‘i High School boys and girls air riflery teams finished sixth at the Civilian Marksmanship Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association air riflery championships Tuesday at the Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i Island range.
Led by consistent first finisher Kristyn Yamamotoya, the Red Raider wahine team piled up 1,870 points, giving up five points to the St. Anthony girls who settled in fifth place with 1,875 points.
The top girls team went to the Waiakea High School girls who accumulated 2,054 points, despite being outshot by Maggie Hinshaw of Mid Pacific Institute (second at 2,039) who posted a 190 in the prone position, the best score of the wahine team shooters.
But in the standing position, Hinshaw dropped to a 125 while Waiakea’s Karise Kuroda posted the second-highest score at 172 and Kuroda out-pointing Hinshaw 179-170 in the kneeling position. Kuroda finished third overall in the tournament.
Yamamotoya posted scores of 182, 149 and 160 in the three positions, finishing with a 491, followed by Meghan Leary (176-146-137-459), Sara Koide (167-124-151-442) and Brooke Hornos (160-150-168-478).
Brandon Chun took the lead for the Kaua‘i boys team who posted a 1,786 team total. The overall team title went to the Waiakea boys team who amassed 2,090 points over the Punahou boys who finished with 2,084 points.
The boys’ competition presented a similar scenario to the girls’ shooting where Dean Rodan of Punahou posted a 193, the second highest score in the prone position, to Waiakea’s Tyler Aburamen who netted a 187 before Aburamen rose to a 158 in the standing and a 171 in the kneeling to Rodan’s 148 in the standing and 169 in the kneeling.
Chun posted a 433 (163-130-140) to lead the Kaua‘i boys followed by Hikari Oberman (153-126-142-421), Matthew Kawamura (156-142-150-448) and Colby Ihara-Takase (176-134-174-484).
Jaron Parongao of Waimea finished in the No. 26 position with a 492 (177-150-165), ahead of Kaua‘i’s top shooter, Ihara-Takase who ended at No. 30. Top shooter on the boys range was Gavin Au of Leilehua who posted a 540 (194-170-176).
Jessica Tangalin, another Waimea shooter, finished in the No. 27 position at 489 (187-146-156), five points ahead of Hinshaw of Mid Pacific and below Yamamotoya who finished No. 26.
Top individualist on the female range went to Brianna-Marie Hollister of Punahou who carded a 541 (193-168-180).
