NAWILIWILI — Trick or treating took on a whole new meaning Sunday when Halloween Very Important People, namely keiki in costume, were treated to an afternoon interlude of fun at Duke’s at Kalapaki Bay.
Keiki — the first 50 who were 12 and younger — had an opportunity to enjoy lunch and have some Halloween-themed fun with make-it-and-take-it activities, including a tricked-out goody bag.
“This is just the second year we’re doing this,” said Wendy Casillas, Duke’s customer relations and sportswear coordinator. “It fills up fast, but everyone gets something provided by contributions from community businesses.”
Duke’s culinary staff prepared a special free spaghetti luncheon which adults could enjoy for a $5 contribution.
“The funds generated by the adult portions benefit The Salvation Army’s Kokua Soup Kitchen program,” said Casillas. “This is a community program and whatever comes in goes back to help the community.”
Keiki, transformed into local-style divas (complete with rubbah slippahs), princesses, superheroes and even a Venus Flytrap plant, paraded through the normally overflowing salad bar area, which served the pasta luncheon.
“Once they’re done with lunch, they have a variety of activities followed by the costume contest which is judged by teachers from the local schools,” Casillas said. “I even have my sister, Sandra Genegabuas, helping along with ‘Grandma Vicky.’”
Costume themes include Prettiest, Scariest, Most Original (Venus Flytrap gets the vote, here) and Super Hero-ist (anyone check out Ironman’s eyes?). The judges eagerly flipped through different color ballots in preparation for the parade.
Duke’s at Kalapaki Bay — the winner of the Best of Kaua‘i in the categories of Best Cocktails, Buffet and Dessert by readers of The Garden Island newspaper — will be celebrating its anniversary in November, and diners can find specials on its website.
