Happy birthday, Nellie Okamoto! Her birthday was Friday and the Kaua‘i United Walk-a-thon was Saturday … her birthday lei was still fresh.
Of course, if Nellie is there, so is Joan Kealalio and all those Interact Club of Kapa‘a High School members who helped with the logistics of the walk which Mike Kano remembers from the days of Moloa‘a, later moving to where the Ka‘ikea fire station is and eventually in front of the Kapaa Bank of Hawai‘i.
On the Westside, Major Victor Aguilar had his troops out along with Lynn Tamashiro and the Waimea Project Grad. They don’t even remember when the walk started at the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center, later moving to Kalaheo at the intersection of Papalina Road and Kaumuali‘i Highway (if Lyle Kobashigawa had the Kaua‘i Kookie Kitchen and Bakery open, he would’ve made a killing!).
Now, we have Lori Almarza, Lynnette Medrano-Stine, Scott Giarman, Dimples Kano (Mike’s mom), Cathy Shanks, Paul Curtis, Jolly Iwata and all the other volunteers doing everything at Kukui Grove.
Great job to all involved, and happy birthday, Nellie!
