PRINCEVILLE — Mingle with the North Shore Rotarians and sample fine wines, all in support of great local projects.
The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay is sponsoring its Sixth Wine Tasting on Saturday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the home of Bob and Mary Capwell, 4301 Kahili Makai St., in Kilauea. The fundraiser is about enabling the organization to continue doing great things, according to the Capwells.
“This is a very important fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay, and funds go to support all of our efforts in international and community projects and programs,” said Bob Capwell, a past Rotary president. “Every Rotary Club has its own programs.”
The wines were selected by local merchants for performance and affordability. Guests can sample the wines and then choose to buy them by the case at a discounted price.
“They are giving us a break on the wines themselves and we pass the savings on to people who are interested in excellent wines,” Capwell said. “The popularity of this event has increased dramatically over the years.”
Hot and cold pupus will be provided by Nanea Restaurant of Westin Princeville Resort.
The proceeds benefit the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay Foundation. It precedes the annual Black and White Ball held in December.
The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay is noted for five significant programs. Its members have raised more than $160,000 so far for the Hanalei Bay Pier repair and are looking for another $150,000 to complete work as demolition of the shed is planned to start soon.
They have raised $200,000 for the Growing Our Own Teachers program. It has placed 39 local teachers into area schools in conjunctions with the other Rotary Clubs on Kaua‘i, including Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i; Rotary Club of Kaua‘i; Rotary Club of Kapa‘a; Rotary Club of Po‘ipu Beach and Rotary Club Kalepa Sunrise.
Other projects include the pavilion restoration, keiki school supplies, scholarships for nursing, teachers and vocational students at Kaua‘i Community College.
The Rescue Tube Initiative was a Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay project. The fundraising has helped to place around 200 of them all around the island.
“The tubes are credited with saving the lives of 18 people to date,” Capwell said. “We are also working to build an ocean safety storage building for lifeguards.”
There is first-come-first-served attendance for about 120 people. The backyard tent event offers limited space. Tickets are $55 in advance or $65 at the door. The nonprofit event allows for a $25 charitable tax deduction.
