KOLOA — There was a line waiting for the doors of the Koloa Public Library to open Thursday morning.
A Friends of the Koloa Public Library volunteer said there were scores of people waiting to see what kinds of selections were available.
“There was a four-DVD Johnny Carson set, which sold for a dollar,” a volunteer said. “Normally, that would run at least $30 on the outside. There were a lot of DVDs and CDs.”
Another volunteer who was checking out customers said the purpose of the sale was to make room for new items arriving at the Koloa Public Library.
Karen Rupp was busy going through a stack of books in her selection, comparing the titles against a list she had of books she’s already read.
“I read a lot,” Rupp said. “Some of the books, I’ve read through electronic versions, others through hard copies. I want to make sure other people have a chance if I’ve already read the book.”
David Thorp, the Koloa Library librarian, said the sale has been pretty good.
“We set up on Wednesday, the preview night for Friends was pretty active with books being sold, and Thursday morning, there were quite a bit of people waiting to get in,” Thorp said. “But that’s good because we have a lot of titles to move.”
The sale continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the library’s Humanities Room.
There are still used books, DVDs, books on CD and paperbacks to select from.
Hardcover books and DVDs are a dollar each, paperbacks, including trade paperbacks, are 50 cents. CDs are 50 cents and Thorp said there is a half price sale on children’s titles at either 25 or 50 cents each.
In addition to the titles, Friends volunteers are also accepting membership to the Friends of the Koloa Library, one benefit being the preview night ahead of the used book sale.
“There’s no more Borders to hang out at, and I love books, so I just hang out at the Koloa Library a lot,” another Friends volunteer chirped.
