John Ornellas Jr.
John Ornellas Jr. of Anahola died peacefully at Straub Hospital on O‘ahu on Oct. 5, 2012 at the age of 70. Born on Dec. 18, 1941, he was retired from Lihu‘e Plantation Company as a crane operator after 38 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Harriet Ornellas Sr.; in-laws, Stanley and Elizabeth Oana Sr.; and sister-in-law, Eleanor L. Carvalho.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Flora (Oana) Ornellas; daughters, Johnette N. (Patrick) Kinzie, and Pualani Ornellas; sons, Roland K. (Tida) Ornellas, and Kaipo R. Ornellas; grandsons, Kainalu K. (Nani) Ornellas, Kaikona K. (Shaylee) Ornellas, Kainoa K. Ornellas, Kaimana K. Kinzie, and Keoni K. Kinzie; granddaughter, Dayla (Palani) Camacho; great-grandchildren, Kaiana K. Ornellas, Kilinoe K. Ornellas, Kawenakai K. Ornellas, Kamalei K. Ornellas, Kealani K. Ornellas, Keani K. Ornellas, and Shelbri Ann Cosier; brothers, Raymond (Valerie) Ornellas, Michael (Nora) Ornellas, Stanley Ornellas, James (Bernie) Ornellas, and George Ornellas; sisters, Marleen (Matthew) Kaluahine, Madeline (Robert) Yokoyama, Beverly (Amil) Valpoon, and Evelyn (Lincoln) Takenaka.
Celebration of life will be held on Oct. 27, 2012, at Anahola Beach Park.
Visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m.
Scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.
Family requests no flowers at this time. Casual wear preferred.

MaryAnn Aki
MaryAnn Aki of Anahola passed away October 1, 2012 at the age of 93. Born on September 28, 1919 in Moloa’a, Kauai, MaryAnn was a retired housekeeper for Kauai Sands.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Miller Aki; son, Fred Aki Sr.; and great-granddaughter Moana Benzon-Aki.
She is survived by her children, William (Hazel) Aki, Marian (Robert) Delapenia, Alfred (Helen) Aki, Richard (Priscilla) Aki, Melvin (Sandra) Aki, George (Joyce) Aki; daughter-in-law, Wanda Aki; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Ko’olau Hui’ia (Anahola) Church. Visitation from 9-10 with services to follow.
Family requests casual attire and flowers be omitted, interment will be held on a later date.
Benjamin Aquino
Benjamin U. Aquino of Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii passed away on October 17, 2012 at Hale Kapuna Heritage Home at the age of 87. Born on October 24, 1924 in Lihue, Kauai, he was a landscaper.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Burgess Aquino; parents, M. Quirino and Clara Unday Aquino; brother, Rudy Aquino; sisters, Katherine Lavilla and Trinidad Pagador.
She is survived by Elepido (Elizabeth) Aquino, Wenceslao (Mary) Aquino, Don Aquino, Dennis (Anita) Aquino; sisters, Fely Begonia, Mercedes (David) Remata, Nadia (Pablo) Sarmiento, Dinah (Wally) Tavares; and numerous nieces & nephews.
Graveside services to be held at Kauai Veterans Cemetery on Saturday, October 27, 2012. Visitation will take place at 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with services to follow.

Elizabeth Kananiokahome Punohu
Elizabeth “Kanani” Punohu of Lihu’e passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the age of 79. For the last few years she has lived in Glendale, Arizona, but Kaua’i has always been her home. She retired from the Kaua’i Westin, which is now called the Kaua’i Marriott Resort.
She is survived by her sisters, Jeanette Mendonca of Lihu’e, Kaua’i, Gloria Siu-Fukumitsu of Ewa, O’ahu; her son, Clayton Jay Punohu of Lihu’e, Kaua’i; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A celebration of her life will be held in Kauai at a future date.
Alpiniano Suyom
Alpiniano Bautista Suyom of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Sept. 26, 2012, at the age of 66. He was born in Tacloban, Leyte, Philippines on June 30, 1946, and was a cook at Family Café.
He is survived by his wife, Lydia Suyom of Lihu‘e; six children, Susana Suyom, of the Philippines, Leah (Jefferson) Suyom of the Philippines, Charie (Ray) Aquias of Lihu‘e, Arden Suyom of the Philippines Marilou and Rey Suyom of the Philippines; brothers, Antonio, Amado, Boy and Eddie; sisters, Inday, Lolita and Yolly all of the Philippines; six grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at St. Catherine Church with viewing from 8 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.

Jonathan “Jody” Alvarez
Jonathan “Jody” Alvarez of Kekaha, Kaua‘i died on Oct. 7, 2012, at Kaua‘i Veteran’s Memorial Hospital at the age of 65. He was born on Sept. 26, 1947, in Waimea, Kaua‘i. He was postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, Lihu‘e Annex, Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. He served in the United States Army from 1965-1968 as a communications center specialist.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Ragocos; father, Jose Alvarez; and brothers, Jose Alvarez, Jr. and Patrick “Flea” Alvarez.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel C. Alvarez; sons, Galen J. Alvarez and Ian Alvarez of Kekaha; granddaughters, Jahna Alvarez of Grand Junction, Colorado and Cydni Alvarez of Kekaha; mother, Josephine Alvarez of Kekaha; brothers, Gilbert Alvarez (Margie) of Las Vegas, Nev., Tommy Alvarez of Kekaha, Brandon Alvarez of Utah, and Vincent Alvarez of ‘Ele‘ele; sisters, Mary Alvarez-Manuel (Larry) of Kekaha and Cordell Blair of Colo.; numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jovita Agpoon Mangayayam of Eleele, Kauai, Hawaii passed away at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on October 17, 2012 at the age of 78. Born in the Philippines on November 25, 1933, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo Mangayayam.
She is survived by her sons, Winifredo (Francing) Mangayayam, Philippines, Danilo (Marites) Mangayayam, Philippines, Alex (Ofelia) Mangayayam, Philippines, Ricardo (Lolita) Mangayayam, Philippines, Ronaldo (Joy) Mangayayam, Eleele, Romeo (Jocelyn) Mangayayam, Eleele, Gernalene (James) Locquiao Jr., Eleele; sisters, Clarita Dispo, California,

Masuye Matsuwaki of Kalaheo, Kauai, died on October 4, 2012 at Hale Kupuna at the age of 92. Born on April 2, 1920, in Hilo, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Kiichi, Robert, Kiyoshi, and Katsuyoshi Sonoda.
She is survived by her sons, Mel Matsuwaki of Calif. and Owen (Irene) Matsuwaki of Kalaheo; daughters, June (Jim) Schwartz of Washington State and Ellen (Roland) Laboguen of Mililani; sisters, Hiroko Segawa and Peggy Shintaku, both of Oahu; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Masaru Matsuwaki of Kalaheo, Kauai, died on October 3, 2012 at Hale Kupuna at the age of 91. Born on January 14, 1921, in Lihue, Kauai, he was a carpenter with State of Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Yoshikatsu, Susumu, Chuck, Yorimitsu (Guy), and James; and sisters, Kimiko Wada and Sadako Tabuchi.
He is survived by his sons, Mel Matsuwaki of Calif. and Owen (Irene) Matsuwaki of Kalaheo; daughters, June (Jim) Schwartz of Washington State and Ellen (Roland) Laboguen of Mililani; brothers, Hitoshi (Gary) and Alex Matsuwaki, both of Oahu; sister, Yoshie Sato of Kauai; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Josiah Kapo’ualanipau’ole Jon Gutierrez of Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii passed away on October 17, 2012 at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 3 months. He was born on July 3, 2012 in Lihue, Kauai.
He is survived by his parents, Fernando “Jr.” and Kailani Gutierrez, Jr.; sisters, Jaylin Gutierrez, Brianna Gutierrez, Zayshia Gutierrez; brother, Isaiah Gutierrez; maternal grandparents, Cedric (Sheryl) Ramos, Pearl (Denis) Souza; paternal grandparent, Carolyn “Dee” Gutierrez; and numerous aunties & uncles & cousins.
