LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School boys and girls teams swept the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling matches to lock up the boys and girls titles Thursday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
With two more matches remaining before Kaua‘i hosts the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships, the Kaua‘i girls, led by Darcie Vea with a 161.44 average over nine games, are undefeated, while the Red Raider boys, led by Randy Iloreta with a 186.56 average over nine games, have been at the top, despite dropping a game earlier in the season.
Vea (161, 189, 152) set the pace for the Kaua‘i girls who tallied a 2071 pinfall over three games over the 1775 pinfall by Waimea and 1641 pinfall by the Kapa‘a wahine.
Following Vea, Kaua‘i’s top scorers included Malia Garcia (125, 164, 187) and Jaffia Cybelle Ballesteros (165, 111, 121).
Lacin Montemayor, sitting second in the individual averages for the KIF at 152.33, topped the Menehune scoring with a 161 in Game 3, getting help from Janelle Papa (114, 150, 124) and Selena Perez-Suniga (127, 107, 139).
Angelika Celia Questin, sitting at No. 2 in the KIF individual standings at 154.78, topped the Kapa‘a scoring at 151, 132, 128 followed by Alexa Thompson (119, 107, 118).
The Kaua‘i boys, led by Randy Iloreta (152, 236, 195), finished the day with a 2435 pinfall to Kapa‘a’s 2060 pins and Waimea’s 1969 pins.
Iloreta currently leads the KIF boys individual averages with a 186.56 over nine games.
Derman Alao followed (180, 154, 153) along with Ian Luis (129, 153, 166).
Clarence Sembrano Jr., currently the No. 2 KIF boys individualist with a 167.78 average over nine games, set the pace for Kapa‘a (181, 145, 171) followed by Kawika Wellington breaking the 200-mark in Game 3 at 202, only the second 200-pin roll of the day. He opened with a 152 and climbed to 160 in Game 2 before breaking 200 in Game 3. Drew Lopez Nishikuni rounded out the Kapa‘a leaders (135, 13, 162).
Chase Ueno, holding the No. 3 spot in the KIF individual averages at 167.44, less than a pin back of Kapa‘a’s Sembrano, topped the Waimea boys at 167, 153, 129. Kalei Nakaya (145, 132, 114) and Weston Souza (124, 158, 131) followed.
The KIF hosts its fifth of six matches, Thursday at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center with the first balls rolling at 5:30 p.m.
