HANAPEPE — In a town already known for its art galleries, The Studio at Hanapepe looks to help customers discover or unleash their creativity.
Operated by mother and daughter Beth and Marielle Leeds, The Studio offers more than 1,500 square feet of space to be creative.
“We want to showcase other artists too,” Marielle said of the space that also provides an opportunity for her to pursue artistic endeavors.
One area of the space is dedicated to airbrushing. Beth and Marielle have painted just about everything from shirts to bicycles and beyond.
Beth started airbrushing more than 40 years ago in San Francisco when she would custom paint backstage passes for key members of touring acts and their management so security would know instantly who belonged backstage.
Since then, Beth and Marielle decided to relocate to Hanapepe to be closer to several friends who live in the area after spending several years living in California and later Hilo.
Over the years, Beth has used various theatrical costuming techniques, such as cutting fabric, to create unique clothing styles.
She also is creating learning opportunities for children through producing puppet shows and airbrushing tattoos at birthday parties.
“It’s all about the kids,” said Beth, showing off a rack of keiki-sized clothing featuring airbrushed designs and cut designs. Marielle recently found a bicycle at a thrift shop which she airbrushed to look like white carbon fiber or “checkerboard” style just to show kids what is possible in the medium.
At The Studio, Marielle said she wants to emphasize the positive in creations and as she works with customers in expressing their creativity.
In addition to plans to feature items made in Hawai‘i, Marielle can see the huge space being configured to allow other activities.
“We could have yoga or music rehearsals in here,” she said.
The Leeds are hosting a grand opening at 2 p.m. today. The event will feature live music, prizes and pupus.
The Studio at Hanapepe is at 3611 Hanapepe Rd., next to Aaron’s Kitchen, across the single lane bridge. Call 808-339-0128 for more information.
