MLB Playoffs
With the MLB playoffs beginning to heat up, it is an exciting time to be a baseball fan. The last two days have seen walk off wins of the epic variety, which included walk off home runs, nail biting ninth innings and underdog come from behind wins.
• The San Francisco Giants became the first National League team to come back from 0-2 deficit and win a five game series. The Giants have catcher Buster Posey to thank for its win as he connected on grand slam, which helped propel them to the victory and clinch a NLCS appearance. The Giants now await the winner of the Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals series.
• Jayson Werth connected on a fastball out over the middle of the plate in the bottom the ninth yesterday, which eventually soared over the fence to give the Washington Nationals the 2-1 win in the do or die situation against the St. Louis Cardinals. The win pushes the series to a game five, where the National will lean on starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez, as the Cardinals will roll out Adam Wainwright. It will be tough for the Red Birds to come back after such a devastating loss especially as they go against such a quality arm in Gonzalez.
• After Raul Ibanez’s heroics from game three, the New York Yankees found themselves in yet another nail biter. This time it was the Baltimore Orioles who would come out on top and force a game five as they went on to win 2-1 in 13 innings.
• Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is the little engine that could also known as the Oakland Athletics coming from behind to score three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in game four to keep the low budget team alive, and force a game five against the Detroit Tigers. The A’s have the lowest payroll in all of the American League at $55 million, on the flip side of the coin, the Tigers have a payroll of $132 million. In fact the next closest team in salary who are in the playoffs is the Washington Nationals at $88 million.
Unfortunately for the A’s its Cinderella run into the playoffs came to an end as they Tigers and Justin Verlander would outdual the A’s to the tune of a 6-0 score.
KIF football
With the KIF football season winding down, there appears to be a slue of possibilities that could play out. A tie or even three way tie is all possible heading into Saturday’s showdown between the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders and the Waimea Menhune.
• The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders (3-1) are sitting in the best position right now, as they control its own fate, if they beat Waimea (1-3) on Saturday that will not only eliminate Waimea from any championship, but will force Kapa‘a (2-2) to win out the rest of the season to force a tie with the Red Raiders.
• The Kapa‘a Warriors will be rooting hard for Waimea to take down the Red Raiders Saturday, if the Menehune do in fact come away with the win, the Warriors would then hold its destiny in its hands. Kapa‘a would still have to win the rest of its games but in this scenario they would be lone champions once again. Kapa‘a has looked solid lately and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do come back to force a tie.
• The Waimea Menehune have the toughest road, in order for the team to have a shot at the title, the Menehune would have to win the rest of its games and hope Kapa‘a beats the Red Raiders on Oct. 20. Even in this scenario it would create a three way tie for first place. Although unlikely, it is a fun scenario to think about.
