LIHU‘E — Saturday is Adoptoberfest at Kaua‘i Humane Society. Grab your crowd-friendly canines and help celebrate the mission and animals of KHS during this family-friendly adoption event and fundraiser at Freddie’s Dog Park.
The event will include a variety of canine games and contests, a Keiki Corner, adoption specials, prize drawings, food and product vendors and loads of adoptable pets.
The event will also be an opportunity to say goodbye to KHS Executive Director Shannon Blizzard, as she is relocating to Kansas City on Sunday, after a year on Kaua‘i. During her tenure at KHS, Blizzard aggressively promoted more interaction between KHS and the community, and the fruits of her work are the increased rates of pet adoption and volunteer retention at KHS.
Volunteer Coordinator Pam Woolway said that in the past, KHS has hosted a day celebrating dogs, called Love-a-Dog day.
“Shannon’s vision though, is focused on highlighting the animals living at the shelter more than throwing a party for Kauai’s dog lovers,” Woolway said. “That is what Adoptoberfest is all about: Getting our animals adopted. It’s about making people aware of how many great animals we have here that are in need of forever homes.”
Adoptoberfest starts at 9 a.m. and goes until 1 p.m. Ron Wiley from KONG radio is the emcee and will be broadcasting it live from the field.
Canine contests begin at 10 a.m. and include categories of best costume, best trick, fastest tail wag, best kisser and pet/owner look-a-like.
Prize drawings will take place every hour and include a grand prize stay at the Kaua‘i Marriott, two rounds of golf at Kiahuna Golf Course and many other great prizes.
The event will also include a dog wash, pet blessing and a Kaua‘i High School Alumni Dog Parade.
“When you adopt, you’re not just saving the life of the animal you’re taking home, you’re saving two lives by creating space for us to save another animal,” Woolway said.
Admission is free to the public, but donations are being accepted.
KHS Freddie’s Dog Park is at 3-825 Kaumuali‘i Highway, approximately one mile west of Puhi and Kaua‘i Community College. For more information visit kauaihumane.org or call 632-0610.
