HANAPEPE — The Koloa Redskins and Kapa‘a Eagles Junior Pee Wee squads kept the crowd at the edge of its seat Sunday, battling to a 20-20 stalemate at the Hanapepe Stadium during the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League games.
Overall, the Redskins finished with two wins and a tie in the series while the Hanapepe Colts split its series with the Kekaha Titans in the nightcap.
JPW: Kapa‘a 20, Koloa 20
The Kapa‘a Eagles appeared in control through most of the first half, the Redskins having the task of trying to come back.
Kapa‘a struck first, building a 14-0 lead behind touchdowns from Levi Cummings and Ezekiel Anakalea before Koloa crawled back.
Cummings broke out at the 6:52 mark, putting Kapa‘a on the scoreboards with a 50-yard score, Anakalea added to the score by kicking the point-after for the 8-0 lead.
With 8:17 showing in the half, Anakalea notched his touchdown following a 64-yard scamper. The PAT failed for the 14-0 lead.
But Koloa answered with two TDs in the final four minutes of the half to deadlock the match, Kawelo Huddy marking the first of his two scores at the 4:11 mark on a three-yard charge.
The PAT failed, but with 19.6 seconds showing in the half, Huddy scooted for a 25-yard touchdown, the point-after boot being done by Jacob Borrero for the 14-14 tie.
The Eagles took the lead in the third stanza when quarterback Kaimi Malina found Cummings on an 11-yard scoring pass at the 4:14 mark, the point-after coming up empty for the 20-14 go-ahead.
But Koloa was not done, answering the ensuing series when quarterback Trey Taba tapped paydirt on a 31-yard keeper with 2:09 showing in the period.
The PAT failed for the 20-20 deadlock following a scoreless final quarter.
MM: Koloa 6, Kapa‘a 0
Kahanu Davis plucked a Kapa‘a pass in the second quarter and ran the ball back 85 yards for the only score in Koloa’s 6-0 win over the Kapa‘a Eagles.
JM: Koloa 38, Kapa‘a 8
Noah Thompson scored four touchdowns to trigger the running clock in Koloa’s 38-8 win over Kapa‘a.
Kapa‘a Eagles’ quarterback Cade Halemanu found Jayson Hawthorne on a 19-yard pass with 6:00 showing in the opening quarter with Hawthorne doing the point-after kick for the early 8-0 lead.
But Koloa answered on the ensuing series, Thompson returning the kickoff 70 yards for the first of his four touchdowns. Kahekili Kelekoma did the PAT boot for Koloa to deadlock the match, 8-8 following one quarter of play.
Thompson found the paydirt following a 28-yard run with 6:09 showing in the half, Kelekoma doing the PAT boot for the 16-8 halftime lead.
With 4:54 showing in the third period, Thompson entered the end zone for the third time, this time on a two-yard charge with Kelekoma’s PAT boot pushing Koloa to a 24-8 lead.
The clock ran out on the period when Thompson crashed the end zone following a 30-yard run, Kelekoma again booting the PAT for the 32-8 lead following three quarters of play.
Alika Ventura, Koloa’s quarterback, iced the win with 8:30 remaining in the game, charging a yard for the TD to trigger the running clock.
JPW: Hanapepe 30, Kekaha 0
Ryno Banasihan marked three touchdowns and Makoa Vanaman added two scores to lead the Hanapepe Colts to its 30-0 win over the Kekaha Titans.
Banasihan opened the scorebooks with 7:05 showing in the opening stanza with a 36-yard score and followed that with a 14-yard scoring run with 7:59 showing in the half for the 12-0 halftime lead.
Vanaman posted his first TD with 7:35 showing in the third quarter on a 37-yard run for the 18-0 lead which was upped by Banasihan at the 3:57 mark on a 79-yard breakout for the 24-0 Colt lead after three periods.
Vanaman iced the victory at the 6:55 mark in the final period, breaking open for a 30-yard touchdown and the triggering the running clock on the 30-0 win.
MM: Kekaha 19, Hanapepe 12
This matchup was declared an exhibition match under a running clock by KPWFL officials due to an insufficient number of players.
Following a scoreless opening period, Hanapepe lit up the boards when Rayson Ruiz tapped paydirt on a four-yard run for an early 6-0 lead with 6:38 showing in the half.
The Titans responded with just 1:24 left in the half when Ane Agemoto hit the end zone following a 10-yard run to knot the score 6-6. Hayden Oglesby broke the deadlock by running in the point-after for the 7-6 Kekaha edge at the half.
Agemoto upped the ante in the third quarter, finding the end zone following a 50-yard run at the 11:00 mark for the 13-6 lead.
With 2:50 showing in the third frame, the Titans’ Oglesby broke open for a 92-yard touchdown to end the period on a 19-6 Kekaha lead.
Hanapepe got its final score with 1:13 showing in the game, Kaili Aquino finding the end zone following a five-yard run for the 19-12 final.
The KPWFL games move to Vidinha Stadium, Sunday starting at 8 a.m. when the Koloa Mitey Mites take on Kekaha.
The Lihu‘e Patriots Junior Midgets take on the Kapa‘a Eagles at 10 a.m. followed by the Koloa JPW taking on Kekaha at noon.
The Lihu‘e Patriots JPW open the afternoon series by taking on the Kapa‘a Eagles at 2 p.m. and the Lihu‘e MM close the day against Kapa‘a starting at 4 p.m.
