KAPA‘A — Lani Kawahara, librarian at the Kapa‘a Public Library, said anyone can be a Friend, Tuesday evening while setting up for the annual books and bake sale.
“The Friends of the Kapa‘a Public Library was inactive for a while, but it’s being re-activated and applications for Friends can be done ahead of the Friends Preview Sale,” said Isobel Storch, president of the Friends of the Kapa‘a Public Library who was helping Kawahara with the set up, Tuesday.
New members to the Friends of the Kapa‘a Public Library will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. at a new member registration and reception, Friday. The reception comes ahead of the Members’ Preview Sale which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kapa‘a Public Library.
The annual book and bake sale opens to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the library’s conference room.
To volunteer, or to contribute baked goods for the sale, people may call Isobel at 635-6053.
“Right now, we’re doing the book sale just once a year,” Kawahara said. “But this is just one of two big events taking place at the library this month.”
With a display of minature jack-o-lanterns and other Halloween themes sprouting, Kawahara said C.R. Greywolf, Hawai‘i’s only professional medieval armorer, will be appearing next week in celebration of Teen Read Week 2012.
Recommended for youth ages 8 and above, Greywolf will present a free 45-minute program focusing on the age of chivalry in Europe, from the start to the modern ideals of knighthood.
Greywolf will be appearing at the Kapa‘a Public Library on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m. and at the Waimea Public Library starting at 6:30 p.m.
Greywolf is a Native American with more than 10 years of experience in weapons smithery, and in addition to being a student of medieval history, he is a martial arts instructor and founder of “The Golden Horde,” a local non-profit historical organization.
Greywolf’s appearance at both the Kapa‘a and Waimea public libraries is sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, Aloha United Way, HMS Host, Meadow Gold Dairies, Hansen Distribution Group, Armstrong Produce, DFS Hawai‘i, Roberts Hawai‘i Tours, and Toshiba Business Solutions.
Additional funding is provided by the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Outreach College’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program, Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
