LIHU‘E — Friday night at the Kaua‘i High School Gym the Red Raiders hosted the Kapa‘a Warriors. The Red Raiders are coming off perhaps its most difficult loss of the season to the Waimea Menehune in a tiebreak set on Wednesday, so it was interesting to see how the team would respond. Kaua‘i would come out looking sluggish and dropping the first set to the Warriors 23-25, however the Red Raiders would bounce back taking the next three sets, 25-9, 25-20 and 25-18 for the four set victory over Kapa‘a.
The first set remainder tight throughout with the Kapa‘a Warriors receiving excellent play at the net from Kaylee Silva, Sara Agoot and Justice Brown-Kimura. Kai‘imi Moniz contributed with an excellent set from the service line collecting a couple of aces.
Despite being ahead for the first half of the set, Kaua‘i would look sloppy at time committing multiple unforced errors and fouls giving points aways, which is one of the main reasons they lost the set to Kapa‘a 25-23.
The second set was polar opposite as the Red Raiders came out firing on all cylinders and rattled off 11 unanswered points with good net play from Kawehi Louis-Diamond, Kristle Henry and Adrienne Graycochea.
Kapa‘a would attempt to battle back with Brown-Kimura and Agoot collecting kills at the net but could never overcome the lengthy lead the Red Raider had carved out. The set would eventually come to an end with a trio of Kaua‘i kills from Louis-Diamond which came off of tremendous sets from Ashley Ramelb, who was able to set the ball wonderfully all night and gave Kaua‘i the easy 25-9 win in set two.
The third set was more of the close variety with both teams struggling to get the upper hand. The Warriors got fabulous play down the stretch from Maile Tuttle and Adarah Fujita but couldn’t quite over come the high powered offensive attack from the Red Raiders with Kauai‘s Henry leading the charge. The set would close on a block from Gilian Gregorio giving Kaua‘i the 25-20 win and 2-1 lead.
The fourth and final set would remain in Red Raider control throughout with Kaua‘i never relinquishing the lead. Ramelb would make her presence felt this time at the service line collecting a pair of aces. She was joined by Tahra Kaui who collected three herself including the final point of the match, which would put the Red Raiders up 25-18 and give it the 3-1 win over the Warriors.
In junior varsity action, Kaua‘i would take the first two sets, 29-27 and 25-17 before dropping the third and final set to Kapa‘a 17-25.
Kaua‘i got nice play from Malia Manipon, while Kapa‘a got solid all around play from Ana Carvalho-Toloai and Haylei Sheldon.
