HANAPEPE — Reymund Mendoza broke out for three of the Hanapepe Colts Unlimited touchdowns to lead the black shirts to a 28-0 win over the Kekaha Titans Sunday at Hanapepe Stadium.
“This is the first year we’re hosting the Unlimited division,” said KPWFL commissioner Teddy Arroyo, while watching the action from the sidelines. “There are no restrictions except for the grade. Players don’t have to worry about weight limitations, they just need to be in grades seven, eight or nine.”
Arroyo said this year, Hanapepe Colts and the Kekaha Titans fielded Unlimited teams, both teams hailing from the Westside. The popularity of the new division should help the Waimea High School football program, Arroyo said. This year, the Waimea program did not field a junior varsity squad in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation league.
Mendoza, a familiar name on the basketball court with Westside teams, broke out for touchdowns of nine and six yards in the first and second quarters, respectively, to give the Hanapepe Colts Unlimited a 14-0 halftime lead after Justin Fune booted the point-after following Mendoza’s second touchdown.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Mendoza put Hanapepe on the board with 4:24 showing in the game, cutting against the grain and breaking out for a 16-yard score. Fune graced this score with another PAT boot for the 22-0 showing.
But Hanapepe was not done for the day, quarterback Logan Kanahele-Shintani gave the pigskin a 20-yard ride to the end zone with just 1:15 showing in the game for the 28-0 final.
Hanapepe Colts continued on to shut down the Lihu‘e Patriots Junior Pee Wee, 32-0 before being humbled by the Koloa Redskins Mitey Mites, 24-0, with the host organization leaving with a 2-1 record.
JPW: Hanapepe 32, Lihu‘e 0
Hanapepe Colts JPW Makoa Vanaman scored a touchdown in the first and second halves to lead the Colts to its 32-0 shutout over the JPW Lihu‘e Patriots.
Following a 20-yard score by Ryno Banasihan and a Noah Ruiz run for the point-after, Tai Ofisa put Hanapepe up 13-0 following his one-yard charge to paydirt with less than a minute peeled off the second stanza.
Vanaman upped the ante on a 46-yard breakout with 3:38 showing in the half for the 19-0 halftime reading.
Colts’ quarterback Lacin Montemayor tested the airwaves, hitting Isahn Ulandy on an 11-yard scoring pass with 3:42 showing in the third frame before Vanaman iced the win with 2:24 remaining in the contest on an 8-yard run to the end zone. Degan Davis ran in the point-after for the 32-0 final.
MM: Koloa 24, Hanapepe 0
Koloa Redskins Mitey Mite signal caller Kahanu Davis tapped paydirt for three of the four Redskin touchdowns in Koloa’s 24-0 win over the Hanapepe Colts.
In the scoring runs, Davis piled up nearly 165 yards on the ground, just on his touchdown runs which started in the opening quarter when he broke out for 44 yards to put Koloa on the boards at the 4:56 mark.
He followed that with 1:32 remaining in the stanza, breaking out for 35 yards to give the Redskins a 12-0 halftime lead.
Following a scoreless second and third quarters, Koloa got on the boards in the fourth quarter when Davis found 85 yards of open ground to the end zone with 7:39 showing in the game.
Joey Sams capped the victory by intercepting a Hanapepe pass and running the ball back 47 yards for the 24-0 final at the 2-minute mark.
Earlier in the day, Koloa wrapped up a 30-7 win over the JPW Kekaha Titans.
JPW: Koloa 30, Kekaha 7
The Koloa Redskins JPW triggered the running clock in the second period after scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter and adding another TD midway through the second frame.
With less than 20 seconds peeled off the clock, Elijah Alderete found the end zone on a 57-yard kick return. Jacob Borrero graced the score with a PAT boot for the early 8-0 lead.
Trey Taba found the end zone for Koloa’s second TD, which came at the 5:12 mark on a quarterback keeper, Borrero adding his second PAT boot for the 16-0 bulge.
With 1:28 remaining in the first period, Wailani Kawahalau found the end zone following a 46-yard run, Borrero’s PAT boot giving the Redskins JPW a 24-0 reading after the first quarter.
Kaimana Nelmida-Rice triggered the running clock following a one-yard charge to paydirt for the 30-0 lead with 4:22 remaining in the half.
Kekaha prevented the shutout in the final period, effectively working a double-reverse when Kristian Cardejon handed off to Koedy Albina, who moved the ball to Weylon Ruiz for a 33-yard touchdown, Bryson Kapahu running in the point-after for the 30-7 final.
MM: Lihu‘e 21, Kekaha 19
Lihu‘e Patriot Mitey Mite’s Tryten Pongasi settled the see-saw in the final period, his second touchdown of the day leading Lihu‘e to a two-point margin over the Kekaha Titans.
Following a scoreless opening quarter, Pongasi put the Patriots on the board at the 7:44 mark with an 8-yard touchdown, Sean Mullikin running in the PAT for the 7-0 lead.
But Kekaha answered with 1:41 showing in the half when Hayden Oglesby connected with Ane Agemoto, Jr. for a scoring 44-yard pass on a fourth down situation. The PAT failed to give Lihu‘e the 7-6 edge at the half.
Agemoto corrected that with 7:34 showing in the third period, finding the end zone on a 46-yard scoring run. Oglesby ran in the PAT for the 13-7 go-ahead.
The see-saw turned in Lihu‘e favor in the fourth period when Mullikin found the end zone following a 50-yard run, Pongasi doing the PAT honors for the 14-13 edge with 6:38 remaining in the contest.
Pongasi put the cap on the win with 2:16 showing in the game, breaking out for a 43-yard score, and passing to Jeyven Orial for the PAT and the 21-13 lead.
But Kekaha was not done as the Titans’ quarterback, Anson Lazaro, tossed a three-yard pass to Agemoto for the score with 1:30 still showing on the game. The crucial two-point PAT boot failed for the 21-19 final in favor of the Patriots.
