LIHU‘E — A handshake Monday morning ensures Kaua‘i bowling enthusiasts will continue to have a home at the Rice Shopping Center.
Darryl Izumo, the former operator of the Lihu‘e Bowling Center, turned over the keys to both the lanes and doors of the only bowling center on the island to Adam Apo, who arrived from Honolulu.
“It is with mixed feelings that I inform you that as of Oct. 1, there will be a new operator of the bowling center,” Izumo said in a letter to bowlers dated Sept. 20. “The shopping center owners and I have worked to provide the community with this activity since June of 1998, and will continue to offer bowling as the new operators assume operation, Oct. 1.”
Izumo said he has been asked to stay on as a consultant during the transition period.
Last week, all employees of the Lihu‘e Bowling Center were interviewed by Apo and his Kaua‘i Bowling Center, having the opportunity to continue working at the bowling center, which will be hosting the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s state bowling championships Nov. 1 and 2.
“I have known Adam for many years and wish him, and the new company, all the best,” Izumo said in the letter. “Mahalo for all of your support throughout my tenure as center operator and I truly enjoyed my time as ‘The Bowling Alley Man.’”
Lihu‘e Bowling Center features 28 lanes, automatic scoring, a snack bar and lounge offering video games, billiards and karaoke as well as a pro shop.
