NAWILIWILI — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, blessed its new Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor office and storage unit, Friday.
Joe Borden of the Kaua‘i DOBOR said the new office was made possible through the work of the Kaua‘i legislative team, spearheaded through Rep. James Tokioka.
“They were paying $40,000 in rent for an office which was too small and inconvenient for its clients,” Tokioka said. “Joe came up with a plan to install modular buildings at the harbor for $300,000.”
Tokioka said this was a case where Borden’s plan helps save the state money by not having to pay rent, and the buildings are built to last.
“This is a real improvement in terms of helping the customers,” Borden said. “Now, a truck and boat can just pull up and we can come out to inspect it. In the past, people were always fighting with trying to find parking. This is definitely better because we’re near the people who need our services.”
Attending the brief opening ceremony were the DOBOR managers of the other islands as well as the Kaua‘i DLNR state parks manager, Beth Tokioka, representing Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr., and the members of the Kaua‘i legislative team including Tokioka, Rep. Derek Kawakami, Rep. Dee Morikawa and Sen. Ron Kouchi.
The Kaua‘i DOBOR office hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. except on holidays.
