With the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders coming up with a big win last week against the Waimea Menhune, it put Kaua‘i in the driver’s seat early in the young season. The Kapa‘a Warriors will attempt to take the seat back after losing to Waimea and falling to 1-1 on the season.
The term “must win game” is overly used in sports, and I don’t think that it applies to this game either, however, this game is very important for both teams.
• Kaua‘i needs this game for two reasons: The first being the obvious fact that it would put them at 3-1 with a two game lead on all of its competition, a big advantage as we near the middle of the season.
The second reason is, the last time these two teams met, the Warriors had its way with the Red Raiders. Kapa‘a seemed to do everything right, and Kaua‘i did everything wrong. The Red Raiders need this game to prove to themselves that they can beat Kapa‘a and once again return to glory.
• The Kapa‘a Warriors heading into its last game against Waimea appeared to be a substantially better football team then the rest of KIF. However, Waimea proceeded to ground and pound its way to a convincing win over the Warriors changing the landscape of KIF.
With the loss, it left a lot of questions: How good is Kapa‘a? Can the team bounce back? Will anyone run away with the division? All are questions that may or may not be answered tomorrow. One thing is for certain, the Warriors would feel a lot better coming out of that game with a 2-1 record and tie for the division rather than 1-2 and two games back.
• It has been incredibly tough to pick winners this season. This game will prove to be no different. I will take Kapa‘a coming off of the bye week, for the simple fact that thus far during the season, every team coming off of a bye has won.
The one thing I can say with 100 percent certainty is that I will be at the game, and no matter what happens it should be a fun one.
