Kaua‘i Police Department Sergeant Rod Green, Lieutenant Paul Applegate and Sergeant Chris Calio will spend the weekend on the roof at Walmart.
Starting Friday at 6 a.m., Sgt. Green, Lt. Applegate and Sgt. Calio have committed to remain on the roof of the Walmart store in Lihu‘e for three consecutive days and two nights, or until they raise a minimum of $25,000 for the Special Olympics Kaua‘i program.
Hosted by Falko Partners, Walmart, Ka‘iwa Construction and the Kukui‘ula Development, the three officers’ appearance on Walmart’s roof is the final fundraising effort for Special Olympics Kaua‘i.
Shoppers to Walmart and patrons to the Special Olympics Kaua‘i Cop on Top receive a logo gift item for each contribution of $5 or more and become eligible for the drawing of a $50 Walmart gift card.
Contributions are also accepted online through www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/sokauai2012/cop-on-top-kauai.
All online donations are secure and there is a provision for a message with the contribution.
With more children joining Special Olympics Kaua‘i each year, and programs for athletes being funded solely through fundraising, people’s donations and contributions are needed now, more than ever, said Shelly Gerardo, Cop on Top coordinator.
Special Olympics is a movement through which the power of sports transforms the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and unites everyone by fostering community-building and civil society.
Its mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults, allowing them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
