Recycle Hawai‘i and Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful are partnering to promote the second annual Keep America Beautiful Recycle-Bowl Competition, according to a news release. This is a nationwide recycling competition for elementary, middle and high school students. Recycle-Bowl was created to provide students with a fun, interactive way to learn about waste reduction and environmental responsibility through in-school recycling.
The goals of the program are to establish new recycling programs within schools, increase recycling rates in schools that currently recycle and to provide teachers and students with educational opportunities to learn more about recycling and waste reduction.
The Recycle-Bowl Competition is open to all U.S. schools. The registration deadline is Oct. 8 and the competition officially begins on Oct. 15. Participating schools will track and report how much recyclable material they collect for a chance to win prizes. At the close of the four-week competition, the school in each state that collects the most recyclable material per capita will win $1,000. A national champion will then be chosen from among the statewide winners to receive an additional grand prize of $2,500.
The 2011 Recycle-Bowl Competition winner for the state of Hawai‘i was Pahoa-High and Intermediate School on the island of Hawai‘i.
Recycle – Bowl has a Competition and Open Division. The Competition Division is broken up into two categories:
• State Champion School (Statewide Competitions and National Title). Each state will have one winning school based on the weight of recyclable material collected per capita (students and teachers). Only schools that report official weights are eligible to win a prize.
• National Community Recycling School (National competition only). A community recycling school is defined as a school that collects recyclable material not only from the school, but from individuals, groups and organizations in its surrounding community, and may solicit and accept recyclable donations from parent’s homes or businesses, individuals, groups and organizations. These schools will also track the weight of their recyclables and divide it by their school’s per capita rate
The Open Division is less formal and can accommodate schools that register late, don’t want to compete for a prize or is located in a U.S. territory, Canada or Mexico. Open Division schools are not bound by the tracking and reporting standards. Open Division schools have access to all promotional resources available from Recycle-Bowl’s website.
